🌍 About the Artisan: The Luhar family in India has been making bells for generations and the tradition has been passed down from father to son. They also preserve the technique by sharing their skills with other family members. Bell making is a traditional art form which originated out of the need to track herds of cattle. Herders could recognize their own cattle by the tone of the bells tied around the necks of their cows. Generations later, the bells are still made for herding, for use in temples, and decor. These bells have been formed from metal from drums that were once used to contain water or oil. The metal sheets are outlined with the bell design, so when they are cut, they get the largest number of bells out of the piece of the metal to reduce waste. Once cut, the sheets are transformed into the bell shapes using basic hand tools and then riveted together for strength. They are then coated with copper shavings and mud and are submerged into fire to create a rustic and distinct look. Lastly, they are hand tuned to perfection, each one having its own pitch that is very intentional.
